Vanderbilt Square was named after Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt -- the millionaire robber baron whose railroad dominated Washington Street for a hundred years.  The trains' soot blackened everything in the area, impeded traffic and killed more than a few pedestrians.

The Greek Revival train station between Salina and Warren streets also drew commerce to the Vanderbilt area, and with it elaborate new architecture.
