On Wednesday, March 6th 2003, what police called a "suspicious" fire damaged the brick row building at 730 N. Salina Street.  City tax record indicate the building was constructed in 1870 and it was within the North Salina district listed on the National Register.

At the time of the fire the lower level was being used as a pawn shop while the upper floors were vacant.  The owner was several years delinquent in his property taxes.

The city declared the building structurally unsound.  It was demolished the following week.

Other cities have found ways to save the facade of buildings like this in order to preserve the historic character of the street.
