Fayette Park (now "Fayette Firefighters' Memorial Park") was once a
wetland and wildlife area. As the village and then city of Syracuse grew
around it, the area became a fashionable residential district hosting some
of the finest homes in town -- the local equivalent of Washington Square
in New York City. Today it remains the largest green space in the downtown
area.
